The Typical Houses of Santana: Madeira’s Cutest History Lesson
Get ready for a Madeiran icon that’s part history lesson, part design inspo, and 100% postcard perfection.
If architecture had a fashion show, the typical houses of Santana would strut down the runway with their pointy hats and bold colours—blue, red, and white, darling! Once just humble rural homes, these triangular beauties have become one of Madeira’s top symbols (sorry, Cristiano).
Crafted mostly from wood and topped with cereal-powered thatched roofs (yes, wheat and rye had a side hustle), they were made to keep things cozy inside and dry outside. Clever? Absolutely. Stylish? Definitely. Iconic? Undeniably.
Inside, they were simple and functional: an attic to stash the veggies and a ground floor where life happened—kitchen, bedroom, and all the good stuff.
Want to see these cuties up close? Head over to the Núcleo de Casas Típicas de Santana and get your camera ready—because these houses are more photogenic than your last holiday romance.
