Good To Know
Welcome to the Museum of Electricity "Casa da Luz"! It's like stepping into a time machine back to Funchal's electrifying past. Picture this: it all started in 1897 when the Madeira Electric Lighting Company Limited fired up the first power plant in Madeira.
Fast forward through some changes, and in 1974, the public company (EEM) took charge of power production, transportation, and distribution in the Madeira Archipelago. But the real shocker? The old Funchal Thermal Power Plant kept the lights on until 1989, when it transformed into the Museum of Electricity - "Casa da Luz."
Now, let's plug into what's inside! The museum showcases everything from vintage oil lamps to modern-day streetlights in the "Lights of Funchal" exhibit. Then, it's a deep dive into a century of electricity evolution with diverse machinery and a nod to thermal and hydraulic power production.
But wait, there's more! Explore renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, and dive into the science and tech zone with interactive gadgets and multimedia software. Plus, there's a café to recharge your batteries and even a gift shop to light up your souvenir game!
