Ever set out for one place and ended up somewhere completely different? Christopher Columbus did it on a global scale! Searching for a shortcut to Asia, he stumbled upon the Americas instead—changing history forever (but still insisting he found India).
🏴☠️ The Journey Begins
Born in Genoa in 1451, Columbus spent years trying to get Spanish royalty to fund his dream voyage. After nearly giving up, Queen Isabella finally said yes in 1492—probably just to stop him from asking.
On August 3, 1492, he set sail with three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña. Ten weeks later, on October 12, he and his crew hit land—thinking they had reached Asia. Spoiler: they hadn’t. They were in the Bahamas, but that didn’t stop Columbus from calling the locals Indians. Geography was not his strong suit.
🌎 The ‘New’ World
Columbus continued island-hopping, visiting Cuba and Hispaniola, then returned to Spain a hero. He was rewarded with fancy titles like Admiral of the Seven Seas and Viceroy of the Indies. Still convinced he was in Asia, he set off on a second voyage, discovering even more land but zero spices from India. Awkward.
By the time Columbus died in May 1506, people were already debating whether he had found a new continent or just taken the longest wrong turn in history. Either way, his ‘accidental discovery’ changed the world forever.
🚢 And now, it’s your turn to follow in his footsteps! Step aboard and relive the adventure right in the heart of Funchal! 🌊
