Good To Know
The hike "Vereda do Areeiro" from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (PR1) is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, including the famous natural rock tunnel. Pico do Arieiro is the third-highest peak in Madeira, while Pico Ruivo claims the title of the highest. Both offer panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making this hike a bucket-list adventure for hikers worldwide.
In this guide, you'll find everything you need to prepare for the hike, from transportation tips to a detailed trail overview. We’ll also share practical advice on what to wear, what to pack, and how to make the most of your journey. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a beginner, this guide will help you conquer one of Madeira’s most awe-inspiring hikes.
Due to its accessibility, the trail has become quite popular in recent years, often drawing large crowds. In response, the government has improved parking facilities at the trailhead. It’s especially popular for witnessing spectacular sunrises and sunsets, but keep in mind it can get very windy and chilly at the summit.
If you're driving from Poiso, there’s now a barrier that opens only if parking is available further up. This helps reduce congestion. After 7:00 a.m., finding a spot becomes increasingly difficult, so it’s best to arrive early. From the parking area, it’s just a few hundred meters to the trail's start, where you'll also find a restaurant and restrooms.
The hike itself is straightforward but demanding, with an estimated 10,000 steps up and down. However, the effort is well worth it when you finally reach the summit of Pico Ruivo. The views are truly rewarding—a perfect moment to reflect and take it all in.
After savoring the summit, you might wonder: how do I get back to my car? The short answer: by walking! For those who prefer an alternative, there’s the option to descend toward Santana and call a taxi from the first safehouse. This ride will cost around 70 euros and take about 1 hour and 20 minutes to return to Pico do Arieiro. Ultimately, the choice is yours. Having tried both options, I found that walking back was quicker and just as fulfilling.
Hiking Tax: And before you go, just a heads-up: there’s a flat access fee of 3€ unless you’re a resident or a child under 12 (in which case, you get the VIP pass). For more details, check out the SIMplifica portal — because yes, even nature has gone digital these days.
BUS: Horarios do Funchal offersa Bus from Funchal to Pico do Areeiro at 06:00 and 13:30 and returns 12:15 and 19:00. For more information click here: http://www.horariosdofunchal.pt/
