Good To Know
Perched on a hill just east of Funchal, the Palheiro Gardens are part of one of the grandest and most lavish quintas on Madeira Island. These gardens are famous for their botanical wonders and jaw-dropping landscapes — it's like walking into a fairytale, but with a lot more greenery!
Dating back to the early 19th century, this 143,200 m² estate was originally owned by the first Conde de Carvalhal. He had the brilliant idea of planting a wide variety of trees, including a stunning collection of camellias that still bloom here today. And if you’re a fan of these elegant flowers, the best time to catch them in full bloom is between November and April, when they put on a spectacular show.
In addition to the nearly 200-year-old trees, the gardens also feature sprawling lawns, peaceful lakes, and even a charming Baroque-style chapel. Plus, there’s a house dating from the 18th century tucked into this lush paradise, adding a touch of history to your nature stroll.
The Palheiro Gardens are also known as the Blandy Gardens — after the Blandy family bought the estate in 1885 — and sit at around 500 meters above sea level. From this privileged vantage point, you’ll be treated to panoramic views over the city of Funchal, the kind of scenery that makes you want to linger a little longer.
So, whether you're here for the history, the flowers, or just to feel like you’ve stepped into a garden dream, Palheiro Gardens offer a serene escape with views that will leave you breathless.
