Good To Know
If trees could talk, Quinta Magnólia’s would have some incredible stories to tell. Built in the early 1850s by J. Howard March, a wealthy American trader and consul in Funchal, this garden started as an elegant retreat surrounded by lush greenery. Inspired by the English landscaping school, it embraced contrasts—geometrical designs mixed with exotic plant diversity, creating a paradise that still captivates visitors today.
In 1895, Dr. Herbert Watney took over and expanded the estate, bringing in an English landscape gardener to enhance the botanical richness. The result? A green masterpiece filled with rare species, some over a century old. But Quinta Magnólia wasn’t just about peaceful strolls and admiring flowers. Between 1931 and 1980, it served as the headquarters of the British Country Club, where tennis matches, social events, and leisurely afternoon teas shaped its vibrant history.
Despite changes over time, including the addition (and later removal) of some rather out-of-place palm trees, the garden has kept its soul. Covering 24,850 sqm, it is home to a diverse collection of plants, with a special highlight on tropical and subtropical species. The tree-lined paths, showcasing different species side by side, create a unique visual harmony that reflects the garden’s long and fascinating evolution.
Today, Quinta Magnólia remains a stunning example of 19th-century landscaping blended with romance, history, and botanical beauty. Whether you're a plant lover, a history buff, or just looking for the perfect Instagram backdrop, this garden in Funchal is a must-visit!
