Good To Know
Welcome, fellow adventurers, to the Casa-Museu Frederico de Freitas—a majestic masterpiece painted in a bold shade of red that's impossible to miss as you navigate the steep streets of Calçada de Santa Clara. This place isn't just a building; it's a standout feature in the urban landscape of São Pedro and the beating heart of Funchal's historic center.
Now, you might hear locals refer to it as the Casa da Calçada, and let me tell you, it's got a history as colorful as its façade. Once upon a time, it was home to the Counts of Calçada, who've been part of the furniture since the 17th century. But hold onto your hats, folks, because this place has seen more makeovers than a celebrity on a red carpet. We're talking romantic and exotic vibes straight out of a 19th-century fever dream!
Fast forward to 1941, and enter stage left: Dr. Frederico de Freitas, a Madeiran legal eagle, collector extraordinaire, and all-around cool cat. He moved in and made this place his own, filling it to the brim with an eclectic mix of art and artifacts that would make even the Louvre blush.
When Dr. Freitas passed the torch (or should I say, the collection) to the Regional Government in 1978, they knew they had something special on their hands. And thus, the Casa-Museu was born! With its doors flung open wide in 1988, visitors were treated to a feast for the senses, from the Casa da Calçada itself to a space dedicated to ever-changing exhibitions.
But wait, there's more! The museum kept growing, adding new wings like the Casa dos Azulejos (that's fancy talk for "House of Tiles") to house a jaw-dropping collection of, you guessed it, tiles! Plus, there's the Casa da Entrada, where you'll find all the behind-the-scenes magic happening.
So, whether you're a history buff, an art aficionado, or just someone looking for a good time, the Casa-Museu Frederico de Freitas has got you covered. Get ready to laugh, learn, and maybe even shed a tear or two—it's a rollercoaster ride through time and culture that you won't want to miss!
