Good To Know
If trees could talk, Quinta Vigia would be spilling royal gossip! Located on the famous Avenida do Infante, this historic estate has hosted more VIPs than a Hollywood red carpet.
Originally called “Quinta da Angústias” (either because of the chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Angústias or because nobles were anguished by their exhausting lives of luxury), this place welcomed high-profile guests like Queen Adelaide of England and the son-in-law of Tsar Nicholas I, who came here to recover from an illness.
In 1979, the Regional Government took over, gave it a complete makeover, and since 1984, it’s been the official residence of the President of Madeira. But beyond politics, the real highlight here is the garden – a stunning mix of exotic plants and local flora, all with a jaw-dropping view of Funchal Bay.
So, if you fancy a royal-style stroll with an ocean breeze, Quinta Vigia is the place to be!
And by the way right next to it is Santa Catarina Park, and that one is for free.
