Good To Know
Welcome, adventurers and brave souls, to the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta — aka the "Eagle's Nest" for those of us who like to pretend we're in a dramatic nature documentary! This scenic stop is located just a stone’s throw from the start of the Vereda do Areeiro (PR1), one of Madeira’s most iconic hiking trails. So, if you're looking for breathtaking views and a workout that will leave you questioning your life choices, you're in the right place!
This spot isn’t just for the hardcore hikers aiming for the highest peaks like Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo (which, by the way, is like climbing the Olympic podium of Madeiran mountains). Nope, it’s also for those of us who just came for the views and maybe a quick selfie to make our friends think we’re super outdoorsy.
Now, why the name “Ninho da Manta,” you ask? Well, back in the day, this was where a majestic bird of prey, the manta (aka the buzzard, or for bird nerds, Buteo buteo), would nest. Picture this: a giant bird looking over this incredible view, probably judging humans for struggling with their backpacks while it casually soars overhead. Unfortunately, you probably won't see any mantas nowadays, but feel free to flap your arms and pretend.
From up here, you can take in views of São Roque do Faial and the Fajã da Nogueira valley, where a bunch of cool little birds called patagarros (Puffinus puffinus—yes, it's fun to say) nest. These birds know a good neighborhood when they see one. And really, can you blame them? If I could nest in a spot with these views, I’d never leave.
If you're feeling up for some mountain magic, you’ll also see the spine of Madeira’s central mountain range from this viewpoint. The rocky formations here are so dramatic they often rise above the clouds — that’s right, you’re basically standing in a scene straight out of a fantasy movie. Maybe even "Lord of the Wings," starring the freira da Madeira (Pterodroma madeira), the most endangered seabird in Europe. This rare bird nests nearby, so when you're here, you’re practically in the VIP section of the avian world.
And after you’ve taken in all the jaw-dropping views, why not tempt fate and tackle the trail that links Pico do Areeiro (a mere 1818 meters of pure glory) to Pico das Torres (1851 meters, but who’s counting?) and finally, Pico Ruivo (1862 meters, for those of you still feeling ambitious). Just be sure to pack your sense of adventure…and maybe an extra snack, because trust me, those peaks don’t climb themselves!
