If you’re looking to explore Madeira’s traditional levadas while getting a little sporty, this is the perfect route. Located on the island’s sunny southwest coast, this trail treats you to both mountain and ocean views — it’s like a nature double-feature!

The trail stretches over 5 km, making it a medium difficulty level — so, challenging enough to feel accomplished, but not so tough that you’ll be crawling by the end. With an elevation gain of 522 meters and descents totaling 512 meters, you’ll definitely get your steps (and your leg workout) in. And because it’s a circular trail, you’ll start and finish at the same spot: Sítio da Lombada, just north of the charming village of Ponta do Sol.

Along the way, you’ll encounter not one but two levadas! The Levada do Moinho offers an irregular path that’s a bit more technically challenging, while the Levada Nova, with its lofty altitude, requires a little extra caution. But don’t worry, the stunning mountain views will distract you from any tough spots — just remember to stop and snap a photo or two.
