Good To Know
Discovering São Roque in Faial is a treat! Perched at the edge of a hill, the church offers stunning panoramic views of the ocean and mountains that deserve to be labeled as a Miradouro (viewpoint). This hidden gem isn't crowded with tourists, so you can enjoy the beauty in peace.
Getting there is a breeze, with three different bus routes stopping right at the church. The charming parish of São Roque is named after the Chapel of São Roque. The original church first appeared in 1551 at a place called Chão da Ribeira, as part of the Faial parish. Fast forward to 1848, and voilà, the parish of São Roque was officially established.
But here’s where it gets interesting! In 1883, massive floods caused landslides that swept the church away, sending debris floating out to sea like an unplanned boat ride. Not to worry, though. The resilient folks of São Roque built a brand-new church, wisely choosing a spot a bit farther from the mischievous river.
So, when you visit, think of the adventurous spirit of São Roque – a place where even the churches have stories to tell!
