Good To Know
Welcome to the Corner of the World, a legendary spot nestled in the heart of Funchal, Madeira, and step back in time to 1933 when renowned Portuguese novelist Ferreira de Castro immortalized this place in his novel "Eternidade." Here, at the iconic Golden Gate café, restaurant, and historic site, travelers and locals alike gather to savor its cosmopolitan charm.
Situated at the convergence of two bustling avenues, the Golden Gate offers a panoramic view of the city, ocean, cathedral and parks, just as it did when Castro found inspiration within its walls during the winter of 1932/1933.
Though the phrase "Corner of the World" gained fame over time, the Golden Gate café has been a cherished part of Funchal's heritage since 1841. Beyond a mere establishment, it's a living testament to the city's evolution, hosting historic figures who passed through on their journeys to distant lands. One of which was Winston Churchhill himself.
After a three-year hiatus, the Golden Gate Grand Café has reopened under new ownership, blending its classic ambiance with modern renovations. While maintaining its timeless allure, the café now boasts an Italian-inspired restaurant alongside its cherished wicker chairs and first-floor veranda, inviting visitors to create new memories in this storied corner of Funchal.
