Good To Know
Madeira’s Christ the King is part spiritual, part scenic, and totally selfie-worthy. Ocean vibes included. 🌊🙌
Perched in one of the most jaw-dropping spots on Madeira’s east coast, the Christ the King statue of Garajau is basically Jesus doing a Titanic pose—with better views. This iconic monument isn't just a religious symbol; it’s a full-on experience. The kind that makes you say "wow" before you even find your camera.
Erected in 1927 to honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus, this majestic statue was the brainchild of Aires de Ornelas—clearly a guy with vision and a thing for panoramic drama. Sculpted by French artist Georges Serraz, it shows Jesus with open arms, gazing out over the Atlantic like he's waiting for a boat… or just vibing with the waves.
You’ll find this beauty at the Garajau viewpoint, in Santa Cruz, where the scenery is so unreal, you might think you've walked into a postcard. Oh, and bonus: this area is part of the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve, so you can admire crystal-clear waters and local wildlife while being spiritually (and visually) uplifted.
Don’t forget to look toward Funchal bay—yep, you can spot that too. A place for peace, pics, and panoramic perfection.
